9 days/ 8 nights
Bring your sleeping bag and backpack!! This trip offers
adventurous
travelers a unique look at 5000 years of history. As there is virtually never any inclement weather and bugs are rare, the stars will
be your cover as you sleep on the deck of your Felucca (sailboat). Fully crewed, your only
job will be to enjoy the incredible sites, sounds and surroundings. This
is life as it has been since recorded history began. Available from October through April.
A sample tour is:
Day 1: Arrive Cairo, be met by our staff who will assist you with
clearing immigration and customs. Transfer to a quality hotel. (D)
Day 2: Enjoy visiting the Pyramids and Sphinx plus the Egyptian museum
before you board the train for your overnight trip to Aswan. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Arrive Aswan and transfer to the Basma Hotel. Located at the
highest elevation in the area you will have striking views of the Nile
and the Desert. Visit the Nubian museum in the afternoon or other
antiquity sites in the area. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Board your Felucca. Raise the sail, turn the bow downstream and
you are off. You will spend the night onboard at El Hardeyat Island
(about 12 miles upriver of Kom Ombo). The Felucca’s deck is nicely
covered with large mattresses and comfortable cushions, serving as your
bedroom, living room and dining room most of the time. Underneath is a
luggage store, where all your bags are put and come out to be available
for you twice a day: Once in the early morning after breakfast and
before starting to sail, then you can prepare a small bag with what you
might need during the day (books, glasses, hat, sun screen, camera,
swimming suit, jacket or sweatshirt, etc.) The bags come out the second
time is just before dark so you can put things away you will not need at
night and get those things you will (flashlight, insect repellent
{although the bugs are not bad, it’s always best to be prepared}.
The nighttime temperatures can fall as low as 10-12C (or 50’s to 60) with
the wind chill (especially from late December through early March).
The Felucca is equipped with a simple kitchen sufficient for providing you with your tasty meals, as well as hot and cold drinks. We
suggest that if you use cream or milk in your coffee/tea bring some
powered substitute such as Creamora or Coffeemate and if you use a
sweetener other than sugar bring it too.
Breakfast is more likely to be a continental one in the early morning while quick, easy prepared food
items are for the lunch; and a delicious dinner is prepared when you
reach your overnight destination. Mineral water & soft drinks are
available at any time and considered as extras to be paid at the end of
the sail. Beer too can be available if you let your tour leader know
before departing Aswan. Tea is the traditional means of showing courtesy and hospitality and you would never be charged for it.
Sailing on the Nile starts in the early morning till sun set in
normal conditions and can be interrupted due to some reasons like wind
or river currents or it may be due to spotting a nice area for swimming
or lunch. Toilet needs can pause the journey and if you need to go you find
an isolated spot on the banks. You will be given a small shovel to take
with you. Once you have the location, dig a small hole and when finished bury your business. An antiseptic hand spray is kept on board
so you can wash your hands on returning to the Felucca.
In the evening you might want to build a small fire on shore and
visit with your Nubian crew where they can teach you songs, show you
their native dances and share stories. We suggest you bring a sleeping bag, flashlight, bug repellent,
sunscreen, hat and sunglasses and if you forget any, let your guide know
while you are in Aswan and he will assist you in obtaining what you
need. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Sail on to Kom Ombo, visit the temple and then sail to Hammam
Island (about 18 miles upriver of Edfu) where you will overnight. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Sail on to Edfu, visit the temple and overnight. (B,L,D)
Day 7: Disembark your Felucca and transfer by bus to Luxor. At Luxor
enjoy visiting the antiquity sites of both banks of the river including
the Necropolis of Thebes with the valley of the Kings, valley of the
Queens, Queen Hatshupset temple, Colossi of Memnon plus the temples of
Luxor and Karnak. Board the train for your overnight trip to Cairo.
