Day 14: An early morning drive to St. Catherine's monastery in the Sinai
Mountains. Climb Mt. Sinai in time for sunrise then enjoy breakfast
before visiting this famous monastery. Tradition holds that God
spoke to Moses here through the burning bush and later gave him the Ten
Commandments on Mount Sinai’s summit. St. Catherine still functions as
a monastery for Greek Orthodox monks. Their order was founded in the
4th century by Byzantine Empress Helena who built a small chapel on the
site, dedicated to St. Catherine, early Christian martyr from
Alexandria, who was tortured and beheaded (by her father!) for her
faith. Her body was supposedly transported by angels to Mount Sinai’s
highest peak where monks from the monastery, guided in a dream, found it
300 years later. In the 6th century Emperor Justinian ordered the
building of a fortress, including a monastery, basilica and the
original chapel to serve as a secure home for the monks and a refuge for
Christians of southern Sinai. The most sanctified building in the
complex is the Church and Chapel of the Burning Bush. The monastery has
the worlds most valuable collection of icons and many rare books, some
of which are on display in the church. Return to Sharm el Sheikh in
