This tour puts you, the artist or the photographer, professional or amateur, in the same place as David Roberts stood to complete his famous historic scenes of Egypt.

Roberts, a Scot artist born in 1796 and raised at Stockbridge, he came from a humble family but through perseverance was able to become one of the most noted artists of his period.  Staring out in 1838 he journeyed to modern day Israel, Jordan, Egypt and other locations in the Middle East.  He recorded daily life and history with his journals second only to his art for helping us understand today the places and the history of the moment.  In the 1840’s his drawings were published in London were well received.  Today the prints are collectors items with some scenes bringing prices well over $1000 each.

Roberts died in London in 1864 of a massive stroke.  While he spent considerable time working on other subjects and projects he always considered his travels to the Holy Lands the pinnacle of his life.

Each of these tours is customized to fit your desires, the areas you want to concentrate on, the scenes you wish to permanently record.  From St. Catherine's at Mt Sinai to the Temples at Abu Simbel, Egypt awaits

Pyramids of Geezeh, From the Nile

“When the river is low and the intersecting canals dry and practicable, the journey from Grand Cairo to the Pyramids of Geezeh is a ride (camel) of little more than an hour.  The traveler mounts in the streets of New Cairo and rides to Old Cairo, where he crosses the Nile at the Madiah, or ferry, to a village the nearest to the Pyramids, though five miles distance from them, called Geezeh, whence the association of its name with these wonders of Egypt and the world.

From across the Nile the appearance of these stupendous constructions is that which is here represented.  Every traveler has read of them, and all are acquainted with their measured magnitudes; yet, thus seen across the river from Old Cairo, few have looked upon them without a feeling of Disappointment; they appear to be unimportant specks in the desert.  When the approach can be made to them in an hour, and directly through the beaten track in the fields, they enlarge more rapidly upon the vision o the observer; but, if the inundation of the Nile be high, a very circuitous route of nearly twenty miles by the canals must be taken; then they dwell upon the eye; which, kept constantly upon them, receives so much less of immediate effect than the imagination had promised to the traveler, that is disappointment is scarcely overcome even when he arrives near to the bases of the Pyramids.  At length, however, they fail not to fill his mind with an idea of their vastness, which he could never have preconceived.”
