OFF SHORE BOATING

Before boating off-shore be sure to check the weather, tides, and navigation rules. When winds or storms hit the unobstructed waters of the open sea the waves can become dangerously high in a matter of minutes. This condition can also interfere with rescue efforts. Be sure that all your safety equipment in on board.

Be aware that boat traffic is heavy on the gulf coast. There are also shallow waters filled with reefs and rocks. Use the marked channels when in these regions.

Remember that boating and drinking do not mix. As many as 50% of all boating accidents are alcohol related.

Before you venture out leave an itinerary with someone on shore. Leave a description of your boat in case the Coast Guard needs to find you. This way, if you are past due returning , the person can notify the proper authorities.

Remember that dumping garbage in the water is against the law. The garbage kills the fish or washes on shore. We need to work together to keep Florida and her waters a beautiful, clean and safe place.
