GREAT OAKS FROM TINY ACORNS GROW

In 1946 the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (known briefly as the Lubbock Little Symphony) had its origin in an idea proposed by Mrs. M.C. Butler, at that time a member of the City Recreation Council. The Council, in an effort to encourage the development of a civic orchestra, advanced $100.00 for music during a summer trial period, and invited local musicians with orchestral experience to participate. William Harrod volunteered his services as Music Director and Conductor.

FAIR MARKET VALUE

For the orchestra's first concert, the Allegro and Lubbock Music Clubs agreed to sell seats in the Lubbock High School Auditorium at a price of $1.20 per seat. Proceeds, of course, went to the orchestra fund.

TO BRAVELY GO WHERE NONE HAD GONE BEFORE

The LSO's first official Board of Directors was named in October of 1946. They were Dr. J.M. Lewis, Leona Gelin, Dean James G. Allen, W.G. McMillan, Dr. C.J. Wagner, Dr. Clifford B. Jones, Dr. H.I.Robinson, Mrs. Raymond Marshall, Lois Alexander and Margaret Turner.

FOR SEASONAL SAVINGS UP TO $2.40 THIS YEAR

The first season tickets where priced at $7.20 for adults (and $3.60 for students). Individual tickets were $2.40. The season included four concerts.

SPECIAL GUEST, INDEED!

Today's guest artists may command fees ranging from $1,000 to more than $100,000 per appearance. Mr. William Hess, one of the premier performers during the LSO's first season, cut his usual $200 fee in half to help launch the then fledgling symphony.

WE WERE NOT AMUSED

Historical notes indicate that the LSO's first concert on October 22, 1946, was performed before a near-capacity crowd. The total gate was $1,799.05, and of this amount, the amusement tax came to $358.01.
