Wheatley Math and Science / Authentic Learning Magnet

The Wheatley Math and Science Magnet was established in 1992 to provide the Lubbock community another school of choice for elementary students. Non-minority students with an enthusiastic interest in science may transfer.

The Wheatley staff provides students opportunities for creative expressions and encourages students to develop skills as a lifelong learner. The approach is one that stresses that learning also occurs beyond the classroom walls. Classes can often be seen outside the classroom collecting s cientific data that is later analyzed and used in various ways.

Two science labs are available at Wheatley. One lab is located in the primary wing and the other lab is located in the intermediate wing. A science specialist assists the teacher with providing students with discovery learning opportunities that may involve animals, aquariums, and models of all kinds.

A math specialist also is on staff and a math lab is provided for student use. The math lab is equipped with numerous manipulatives (objects which help students solve problems using a hands-on approach).

Additional opportunities that help support the magnet program include: full day kindergarten, CIMA (gifted and talented) identification and instruction, small classes (pupil to teacher ratio 17.5-to-1 for the 94-95 school year), computer instruction in every classroom, Odyssey of the Mind, and Future Problem Solving.

Additional magnet components for the 95-96 school year include: an extended day / after school enrichment program that students may participate in after 3:15 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Student participation is at no expense to parents. With the continued expansion of authentic learning, students are given a learning opportunity through participation in a bookstore, bank, and grill.

Wheatley, located at 1802 E. 28th Street, offers children a quality education in a fun caring environment. For further information you may call the school at 766-1877 or the LISD Magnet programs office at 766-1049.
