Medical Professions

The Estacado High School Medical Professions Program includes:

        . Regular courses as offered at all other high schools in Lubbock
        . Courses for academically talented students
        . Courses for students pursuing allied health, dental, medical, medical business administration, nursing, or veterinary careers
        . Courses available only at Estacado High School
        . Practical experience relating directly to the medical world

All regular courses are described in the comprehensive course offerings bulletin.

Those courses that are scheduled only at Estacado High School and taught with an emphasis on medical professions are included in this bulletin.

Students in the Professional Careers magnet at Estacado High School may participate in the Tech Prep Occupations Curriculum of South Plains College. This will provide an opportunity for students to enroll concurrently at the college and Estacado for high school credit, deferred college credit, or both.

Estacado High School has an opportunity for students to be involved in eight classes during the school day.

    I. Eligibilty

    Students from the entire school district are eligible for admission to Estacado High School’s Medical Professions Program. Students may gain entry into the program by application.

    Criteria considered for placement will be:

      . Special interest in medical professions
      . Student attendance
      . Academic preparation
      . Standardized test scores
    II. Course Offerings

      A. Regular CoursesCourses listed in the regular course offerings bulletin (including honors classes) will be available to students who transfer to Estacado High School.

      B. Medical Professions Magnet

        . Health Care Science (plus field trips)
        . Health Care Science Honors (plus field trips and overnight excursion)
        . Health Occupations Lab I (plus preceptorship*)
        . Health Occupations Lab I Honors (plus preceptorship* and overnight excursion)
        . Health Occupations Lab II (plus preceptorship*)
        . Health Occupations Lab II Honors (plus preceptorship* and overnight excursion)
        . Health Occupations Co-op I and II
        . Physiology and Anatomy
        . Physiology and Anatomy Honors

      *Preceptorships are supervised experiences which allow medical professions magnet students opportunites to gain exposure to various areas of allied health, dental, medical, nursing, research/ development, and veterinary careers. Preceptorships occur at various health care facilities throughout the city during the regular school day. Research/development preceptorships occur in laboratories at Texas Tech Health Science Center.

      The following requirements must be met:

        Entrance requirements for the Professional Careers Magnet Program honors classes:

        a. Pass all portions of TAAS.

        b. An overall grade point average of 3.2 and the recommendation of present principal and/or former principal.

        c. In addition to "a" and "b" above, a student must meet the following criterias for entrance into the honors courses.

          1. English - No grade below a B in English the year prior to entry into the program

          2. Math - No grade below a B in math the year prior to entry into the program

          3. Science - No grade below a B in science the year prior to entry into the program

      C. Enriched Academic Courses
