PHYSICAL EDUCATION

A student may graduate without taking formal physical education course by completing courses or activities authorized to substitute for physical education. The courses and activities are as follows: Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), Athletics, Dance I-IV. Marching band, Cheerleading during the fall semester, or two or three hour block career education gainful employment units. A student is required to take one-half to one unit of Physical Education I and II and one-half to one unit in Physical Education III and IV. The Fitnessgram will be administered one time each semester in physical education classes. Students may earn no more than two units credit in physical education toward state graduation requirements. If a student takes a fifth and/or sixth semester of physical education or a physical education substitute, he/she may earn local credit during those semesters.

Physical Education I, Grade 9-11, 1/2 Credit (Fall Semester), [Regular]
This is a survey course designed to allow students to understand the meaning of a wellness lifestyle. Physical activities emphasize the development of personal fitness levels. Students also will have an opportunity to participate in team sports. A fitness test will be administered. (3820100)

Physical Education II, Grades 9-12, 1/2 Credit (Spring Semester), [Regular]
Students participate in physical activities that promote an understanding or aerobic fitness, rope skipping, gymnastics, jogging, recreational, dual, and team sports. A fitness test will be administered. (3820200)

Physical Education III, Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit, [Regular]
This course is designed to provide the opportunity to participate and develop more advanced skills in golf, soccer, weight training, aerobics, and other individual and team sports. A fitness test will be administered. (3820300)

Physical Education IV, Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit, [Regular]
This course is designed to provide the opportunity to develop skills in lifetime activities. (Archery, badminton, golf, tennis, bowling, and table tennis) These activities may be developed for dual and team sports. A fitness test will be given. (3820400)

Gymnastics, Grade 9, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
This course provides activities in tumbling, vaulting, beam, rings, parallel, uneven, and horizontal bar. It may be taken on a beginning (basic) level or intermediate (advanced) level. (Hutchinson and Slaton) (3820500)

Gymnastics, Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
Beginning and intermediate gymnastics. Includes such activities as basic tumbling floor exercise, and basic gymnastics. The gymnastics phase will cover the fundamentals and skills required for various pieces of apparatice. The course will emphasize the progressive development of skills from the beginning level to the intermediate level. May be repeated for credit. (Lubbock) (3820500)

Advanced Gymnastics, Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
The skills taught in this course are more complicated and require a higher degree of competence than the previous course. The primary emphasis at this level will be the development of individual routines on various pieces of equipment. The competitive aspects of tumbling and gymnastics will be covered with emphasis on the Olympic activities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in exhibitions and some competitive meets. This course will concentrate on the following activities:

    Boys: Horizontal bar, floor exercise, side horse vaulting, long horse vaulting, parallel bars, and rings.
    Girls: Floor exercises, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and side horse vaulting.

Ballet I , Grades 10-2, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
A fundamental course in body balance and controlled movement necessary for the training of potential dancers, actors, singers, and athletes, and helpful in achieving poise for any student. Laboratory classes include preliminary warm-ups at the barre, practice of the basic adagio and allegro movements away from the barre, and other activities for the development of rhythmic skills. Lecture sessions include a survey of terminology for formalized dance. Simple choreography is introduced. Attendance at dance concerts is required. Prerequisite: None. (Lubbock) (3830100)

This course provides experience in the area of ballet, modern dance, jazz, and production. Units of study will also consist of nutrition and physical fitness training. Modern Dance I, II, III, Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
Experience in the interpretative movement techniques of modern dance as taught by such leading dance artists as Graham, Cunningham, Limon, and Hom. The importance of eurhythmics is stressed and the art of dance-drama is introduced. A survey of the history of modern dance will be included. Participation in public performance is required. Jazz Dance I, II, III, Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
Study and development of dance techniques in classical and contemporary jazz styles will be stressed. Experience will be provided in individual and group choreography. Advanced Dance, Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, [Regular]
