This course prepares the students to become skilled readers in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. The course emphasizes response writings, critical analysis and multiparagraph essays. Vocabulary study and outside reading are stressed. This course provides an integrated approach to language arts. Emphasis is placed on increasing the length and complexity of compositions, revising and proofreading written work, understanding and analyzing literature, and improving comprehension and study skills. The literature studied in this course includes poems, short stories, plays and nonfiction pieces from various authors. (3220200)

English III, Grade 11, 1 Credit, [Honors]
This course continues the emphasis on the integration of reading and writing skills as students study the language and literature of America. Students write multi-paragraph compositions incorporating outside documentation from various sources. They also use critical thinking skills as they study the elements of fiction and non-fiction. English III AP, Grade 11, 1 Credit, [Advanced Placement] This course is designed to prepare the student for taking the Advanced Placement Language and Composition Exam, which a student may take either the junior or senior year. Higher level critical thinking skills are the focus of the course with emphasis on in-depth literary analysis, primarily of American and nonfiction literature. (A3320100)

This course focuses on the integration of language and composition skills with an emphasis on authors, periods, forms and works in British literature. Students are expected to demonstrate a more sophisticated use of writing, research, reading, comprehension, and study skills in this senior-level course. (3220400)

This course is designed to prepare the student for taking the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition Exam, which a student is encouraged to take the senior year. English as a Second Language (ESL) I, II, III, IV, Grades 9-12, 1 Credit [Regular]
For students whose proficiency in English is limited as determined by various standardized tests and who are recommended by the school Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC). Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be developed according to each student’s needs and abilities. ESL may be taken for elective credit and/or English credit. The ESL class is not a tutorial for other subjects. ESL, which is offered only at Monterey High School for Grades 10-12 and at Cavazos and Dunbar Junior Highs for Grade 9, may count for any two of the four English credits required for graduation from a Texas high school. If ESL is used for two English credits, two more years of ESL may count as elective credits.

It is highly recommended that students who score a one, two, or three, on the Language Assessment Scale (LSA) or below the 40th national percentile in language and reading on the California Achievement Test or the NAPT be placed in ESL as recommended by the LPAC. Academic Vocabulary Development, Grades 10-12, 1/2 or 1 Credit, [Regular]
This course includes a study of Latin and Greek roots and prefixes as well as the vocabulary used in college entrance exams and in higher education contexts. In addition to improving one’s personal vocabulary, one can expect to increase test results on the PSAT, SAT, and other standardized tests. (3221800)

Designed to improve reading speed, comprehension, and associated study skills. For average or better readers who are reading on grade level or above. (3270200)

Reading Improvement I, II, III, Grades 9-12, 1/2-3 Credits, [Regular]
For students with deficiencies in reading rate and reading comprehension, as evidenced on the TAAS. Prerequisite: Recommendation of English teacher (I: 3270400; II: 3270500; III: 3270660)

Creative/Imaginative Writing, Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit, [Regular]
Introduction and examination of the different types of creative writing including poetry, prose, technical, and informative writing. Recommendation of English teacher suggested. (3221200).

For outstanding students. Classical to modern literature presented by theme, literary type, and chronoloty. Out-of-class readings required. Composition is not emphasized. (3221400)

Humanities, Grades 11-12, 1/2 Credit, [Honors]
For outstanding students. A survey of themes and concepts in the graphic and plastic arts, music, architecture, and literature. Necessary historical and philosophical background is covered. (3221600)

For outstanding students. World literature presented by classifications, such as novels, dramas, shortstories, etc. (3221500)

Technical Writing/Report Writing, Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit, [Regular]
Designed to improve skills in gathering information and putting information into written form. Emphasis is given to organizing material, interpreting data, using outlines, writing research papers and technical reports.
