FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The following language courses must be taken in sequence. Two credits of the same language meet the foreign language requirement for the advanced transcript.

American Sign Language Level I, Grades 9-12, 1 Credit, [Regular]
Includes receptive signing, expressive signing, history and culture of Deaf people, language concepts and an emphasis on interactive communication. Skills and concepts are presented so that students will be able to communicate, using American Sign Language, on a give-and-take basis. This is not a course in signed English. While this course satisfies the State of Texas requirements in foreign language for the advanced transcript, each student should check with the college or university of his choice to determine if this course satisfies entrance requirements in foreign language for that institution. American Sign Language Level III, Grades 10-12, 1 Credit (3980300), [Regular]
These advanced courses in American Sign Language continue the development of skills in receptive signing and expressive signing. Expanded presentations on the history and culture of Deaf people are included in the curriculum. The major emphasis, is on interactive communication in routine situations. These are not courses in signed English. While these courses satisfy the State of Texas requirements in foreign language for the advanced transcript, each student should check with the college or university of his choice to determine if these courses satisfy entrance requirements in foreign language for that institution. Begins in grade 7 or 8 and is the first half of Level I (graduation credit is not awarded until IB is passed). French Level III AP, Grades 10-12, 1 Credit, [Advanced Placement]
Includes literature, advanced conversation and grammar, videotapes, language games, history and culture of the foreign countries. Medical Terminology from Latin, Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit, [Regular]
Elective, Designed to teach students the specialized words and phrases from the Latin language used in the medical profession. Includes reading and writing of simple Latin expressions, word bases, and affixes, such as those used in physical science, anatomy, and biology, Also includes terminology and abbreviations for medical prescriptions. This is not a fulfillment of a foreign language credit. No prerequisite. (Estacado) (3430700)

Medical Terminology in Spanish, Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit, [Regular]
Elective. Designed to teach students to understand Spanish words and phrases relevant to the medical profession. Includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing of simple expressions for communicating on a basic level with Hispanics about medical information. Also includes a study of the diversity of a multicultural society with which workers in the medical profession come in contact. This is not a fulfillment of a foreign language credit. Spanish Level I, Grade 7, 1 Credit, [Regular]
For students in a magnet junior high, provided that the student has had at least three years of Spanish at a magnet elementary, has the recommendation of the elementary Spanish teacher, and elects to take this course instead of Spanish IA. A one-year course designed for the native speaker of Spanish. Students are selected based on their use of oral Spanish. (3440100 and 3440200)

Spanish Level II, Grades 8-12, 1 Credit, [Regular]
Begins with a review of the first level of the language. Includes conversation, listening, reading, writing, videotapes, language games, some literature, and culture such as art, music, foods, and customs of the foreign countries. Students who take Level I in grade 7 at a magnet junior high will take this course in grade 8. Spanish II follows either Spanish I or both Spanish IA and IB.
