ART

The art program offers opportunities for in-depth study in the visual arts to the student seeking a career in art or art-related fields and to those seeking personal enrichment and an appreciation. The offerings are built on required beginning fundamentals followed by a variety of advanced courses. The maximum number of units of credit which a student may earn in art is one unit in Art I, two units in Art II, three units in Art III, and three units in Art IV.

Art I - Fundamentals, Grades 9-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
An introduction to the elements and principles of design as applied to drawing, painting, graphic arts, and crafts. (3500100)

Art I - Electronic Media, Grade 9, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
An introduction to the elements and principles of design as applied to drawing, painting, graphic arts, and also a general survey of various categories of commercial art: advertising, fashion design and illustration, cartooning, industrial design, packaging, illustrating and photography. Art II - Fundamentals, Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
Study of the elements and principles of design as they relate completed compositions. Emphasis on acquiring and furthering skills in drawing, painting, designing, sculpting, and art appreciation. (3500200)

Art II - Drawing (Medical Illustrations), Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit (Regular)
A studio course in which students will concentrate on developing drawing skills, mainly in the area of the human form, from a study of the anatomy, the skeleton, muscles, and individual features. Study and critiques of the figure in paintings will be followed by live, posed models. Recommended elective for pre-medical students. Prerequisite: recommend concurrent enrollment with Biology I. Art II - Drawing (Medical Ilustrations), Grades 11-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
An advanced studio course in which students will concentrate on developing drawing skills, mainly in the area of the human form, from a study of the anatomy, the skeleton, muscles, and individual features. Art III - Fibers And Jewelry, Grades 11-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
Application of color and design concepts. Emphasis is on three dimensional projects such as fiber weaving, basketry, wood sculpture, jewelry, copper, enameling and leather work. Prerequisite: art I or art II. May enter at semester with teacher approval. (35020000)

Art III - Printmaking/Drawing, Grade 11-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
Emphasis on two dimensional compositions exploring various materials in advanced drawing and designing skills. Simple and complex printmaking techniques of silkscreen, wood and linoleum blocks and collographs are taught. Lettering, illustration and layout studies. Prerequisite: Art I or Art II. (3501500)

Art III - Ceramics, Grades 11-12, 1/2-1 Credit (Regular)
Basic through advanced techniques of designing, decorating, glazing, and firing clay objects; survey of related art history. Three processes studied: hand modeling, sculpting, and using a potter’s wheel. Prerequisite: Art I or Art II. (3501800)

Art III - Painting, Grades 11-12. 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
A study of drawing and painting through various media with emphasis on transparent watercolor, acrylics, oil and mixed media. Includes study and appreciation of art trends through the centuries. Students learn to display their work for exhibit. Prerequisite: Art II of teacher approval. (3501400)

Art III - Drawing (Life Drawing), Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit (Regular)
A studio course in which students will concentrate on developing skills, mainly in the area of the human form, from a study of the anatomy, the skeleton, muscles, and individual features. Art III- Commercial Art (Fashion Illustration), Grades 10-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
A specialized class learning uses of various media for fashion illustration, styles in illustrating, and reproduction techniques. A study of historic costume, textiles, designers, and career possibilities. Includes visits to museum, textile engineering and research center, advertising departments of local stores, and advertising agencies. Prerequisite: Art I or Art II. (Lubbock) (3501300)

Art III - Sculpture, Grades 10-11, 1/2-1 Credit, (Regular)
A studio art course in which students work independently to develop their skills in sculpting in one or more of the following methods: round, relief, modeled, carved, cast or assembled. Student pays for materials used in casting and carving. Prerequisite Art I or Art II. (Lubbock) (3501900)

Art III- Drawing (Environmental Design), Grade 10-11, 1/2-1 Credit (Regular)
A study of functional aesthetic design in human environments, such as planned communities, parks and buildings, for recreational, commercial and residential use. Creative planning of futuristic environments will be explored, such as sun control for energy conservation and modern day governmental requirements. Art III AP - Appreciation/History (Survey Of The Fine Arts), Grades 11-12, 1/2-1 Credit, (advanced placement)
This art history course is designed to introduce students to works of art from the past as well as the present time. Art IV- Advanced Studies In Art, Grade 12, 1/2-1 Credit, (Honors)
Designed to allow students to pursue independently areas of interest previously studied. Offered to senior students who have achieved a high level of proficiency in art. Prerequisite: at least one art course and teacher approval. (3500400)

Art IV AP - Advanced Studies In Art, General Portfolio/Drawing Portfolio, Grades 11-12, 1/2-1 credit, (advanced placement)
Studio art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the production of art and who plan to attend universities or art schools that require a general art course or a year of drawing at the freshman level.
