HONORS CLASSES, ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES, AND GIFTED/TALENTED PROGRAMS

A. HONORS CLASSES:

For some students the work presented in the regular curriculum may not be sufficiently challenging. Thus, enriched or honor classes are provided to offer more flexibility, greater acceleration of subject matter, and better provision for independent study. Quality of work and the opportunity for creativity and imagination are primary objectives of courses of this type. By their depth and breadth, the courses challenge the students’ minds and satisfy their curiosity and desire for learning.

The basic qualifications considered for a student entering an honors class are an overall grade point average of 3.20 and a preceding year record of no grade below 80 in the subject area involved. Generally speaking, students should have an IQ of 115 or more. Also needed is the recommendation of present and/or former teachers and counselors who, in addition to the students' past scholastic achievement, will take into consideration the following:

    * Special interest in the subject

    * Interest in reading and research

    * Study habits and attendance

    * Indication of ambition

To remain in honors classes, students are expected to maintain averages of 80 or higher.

The following honors classes for grades 10-12 carry an extra grade point. The courses with the asterisk (*) may be taken as regular courses or as honors courses. In the section that follows, one will find Advanced Placement Courses that carry an extra grade point.

B. ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES (AP):

Advanced Placement courses, designed to expand educational opportunities for qualified students, are developed by the College Board. All teachers of AP courses have received formal instruction at College Board-sponsored conferences and institutes. AP courses usually require more work outside of class time on the part of the students than do other courses. AP courses prepare students to take AP examinations. As a result of scoring at a designated level on an AP exam, students may earn college credit or may test out of a course and advance to the next course, or both. All Lubbock high schools participate in the AP program. AP curricula are offered in the following courses.

The student’s application form provides a space for parent signature which indicates approval of enrollment in one or more high-achiever classes. This form may be obtained from the school counselor.

C. GIFTED/TALENTED PROGRAMS:

Students who are identified as Gifted and Talented (G/T) will be provided opportunities in designated English and Social Studies courses to meet their educational, psychological, and social needs. The content of the curriculum for them provides the opportunity to engage in more elaborate, complex, and in-depth studies of major ideas, problems, and themes that integrate knowledge with and across the disciplines. The major themes of origins, conflict, tradition, systems, structure, influences, changes and transitions provide the framework for this in-depth examination of issues.
