Alternative Schools

A. MATTHEWS COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER

Matthews Alternative High School provides a flexible high school setting designed to assist students who are within approximately five credits of graduation. Matthews offers a self-paced curriculum with a choice of morning or afternoon classes with an open entry/open exit policy. Students who complete credits through the program have the option of returning to their home school at semester or continuing at the alternative campus.

The in-school GED program is also part of the Matthews Alternative High School. The in-school GED is offered for students who will probably not graduate from a regular high school. Students must be at least 16 years of age before the school year starts and must be capable of passing the GED.

Students desiring to enter the alternative high school or in-school GED program should contact counselors at the home school to determine credits needed before applying for admission to the Matthews campus.

B. NEW DIRECTIONS

The Lubbock Independent School District provides an alternative educational program called New Directions for pregnant students and young mothers. A student may choose to enroll in New Directions at the beginning of any semester or she and the principal may mutually agree upon a desirable time to transfer to New Directions. Normally, a transfer into New Directions should occur at the beginning of a new semester. This statement does not preclude the student’s remaining in the regular school program throughout her pregnancy.

A joint effort by Early Learning Centers of Lubbock and the Lubbock Independent School District provided a day care center for young mothers who need childcare for their children ages 0-4 years. Students have the option of attending New Directions or other LISD schools. The Early Learning Center located on the New Directions campus provides childcare on a sliding scale fee for all LISD students.

C. PROJECT INTERCEPT

Project Intercept is a joint effort by the Juvenile Probation Department and the Lubbock Independent School District to provide an alternative to student suspension. Entry into this program is based on the action of the Project Intercept Committee (PIC). Through this program an opportunity is provided for students to continue their education in a strict environment. This alternative is used after other methods of dealing with student behavior problems do not meet with success.
