SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDENTS PLANNING TO ATTEND COLLEGE

TYPICAL MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: As there is such a wide variation in the entrance requirements of various colleges, it is very difficult to list a typical or minimum entrance pattern. Although the counselors maintain a college bulletin file, it is recommended that students secure current bulletins from the colleges they may consider attending and select high school courses which meet the entrance requirements for these colleges. Students should note that the entrance requirements vary within departments of divisions of a college. For example, engineering schools require that students present additional units in mathematics and science.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES: Some colleges require two years of foreign languages, some require three years, and others do not require any. The general education requirement at Texas Tech includes foreign language, unless students have completed two units of a single foreign language at the high school level.

REQUIRED CREDITS AND LIMITATIONS ON ELECTIVES: The number of electives allowed for admission varies considerably among colleges and sometimes only a limited number of certain types of electives are accepted. Students should check carefully to determine the limitations placed by the college of their choice on the number of electives allowed in a certain subject area or in a combination of certain subject areas.

SPECIFIC COLLEGE DEGREES: Students should consider whether the minimum entrance requirements will provide adequate background for the courses required by colleges for specific degrees.

RANK IN CLASS: Some colleges accept only those students who rank at a certain level of the class (for example: upper 10 percent or upper 25 percent). Rank is determined by grades made during the freshman, sophomore, and junior years in addition to the first semester of the senior year (grades 9, 10, 11, 12). All subjects in which a numerical grade is given shall be used in evaluating rank. If the same course is taken a second time, both grades will show on the transcript and both grades will be counted toward the grade point ratio and the rank in class.

Students receiving credit for a foreign language taken in grades seven and eight and students receiving credit for Algebra I taken in grade eight will also receive credit towards graduation, and the grades will count towards rank in class.

For the purpose of determining rank in class, as well as determining honor students, the following grade point scale will be used: 90-100=4; 80-89=3; 75-79=2; 70-74=1; 50-69=0. For honors courses the following scale will be used: 90-100=5; 80-89=4; 75-79=3, 70-74=2; 50-69=0.

Example: A student who has the following scores on a report card will have his/her average figured as follows:

CourseGradePointsGPA
English II914
Algebra II H864
Biology I954
World History994
Health I803
P.E.762
2121/6=3.50
