HEAD START

Program Description: The Head Start program is integrated into the local pre-kindergarten program. Children in Head Start receive the same instructional programs as those in pre-kindergarten. In addition, students receive complete medical and dental screening at the beginning of the school year. Any identified problems are treated throughout the year.

Program Goal: The goals of the Head Start program are (1) to provide oral language instruction and (2) to provide medical and nutritional assistance.

Students: In order to be eligible for this program, a child must be four years old on or before September 1 of the current school year and must meet the federal requirements on family income. Program guidelines require that at least one third of the daily nutritional needs be provided through the program; therefore, students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Time and Staffing: All Head Start eligible children have the option of attending neighborhood elementary schools which have a half-day, four-year-old pre-kindergarten class if they do not attend the full-day program at Ballenger.
