LIBRARY

Program Description: Library facilities provide an inviting atmosphere conducive to recreational reading enjoyment and library skills instruction. In addition to books, library collections include posters, filmstrips, videos, vertical files and other audio-visual materials. Students are directly involved with the learning and application of specific library skills. Students use Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Subject Headings to locate materials. They receive instruction and practice in the use of the card catalog, dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs and various indexes. Students are encouraged to be knowledgeable and discerning with respect to quality literature and the use of resources. Motivational reading programs are provided which offer individual reading records and recognition of student achievement. A summer library program provides students with the opportunity to enjoy programming and reading each summer. School libraries are part of the total library effort of the community and work closely with the public library.

Program Goals: The goals of the library program are to encourage reading for pleasure as well as for information, to enable students to become independent, lifelong users of the library, and to support the instructional program.

Time and Staffing: Each school has the service of a certified school librarian. A library assistant is assigned to each school. Each class comes to the library weekly. Flexible scheduling is encouraged. Librarians teach a minimum of 4 classes per day in buildings where they are assigned two or more days per week. In addition librarians are responsible for reviewing, selecting, ordering and cataloging materials. The libraries are open to individuals and small groups in addition to scheduled classes.
