GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

Program Description: The guidance and counseling program in Lubbock Independent School District is an integral part of the total educational program. The foundation of the program is the guidance curriculum component which is designed to provide developmentally appropriate assistance for all students to acquire and apply basic life skills by utilizing the special knowledge and skills of the school counselors. The responsive services component is designed to intervene on behalf of those students whose immediate personal concerns or problems put their continued personal-social, career,and/or educational development at risk. The counseling may be preventive, i.e., designed to intervene with students who are on the brink of choosing an unhealthy or inappropriate solution to their problems, or remedial, i.e., designed to intervene with students who have already made unwise choices. The individual planning component of the program is designed to assist students in monitoring the understanding of their own development. These skills enable students to become lifelong learners, set educational goals, and plan for their future. In addition to direct student service, school counselors consult with teachers and administrators on behalf of students and parents through the system support component. Counselors make every effort to keep parents informed and invite parent input into the counseling and diagnostic processes.

Program Goal: The goal of the program is to help all students develop and apply basic life skills in order to achieve maximum education, personal-social, and career benefits from the educational system.

Staffing: The services of a counselor are available to each campus. Depending on the size of the school and based on the weighted matrix of need, the school may have 2, 3, or 5 days of service.
