COMPUTER LABS

Program Description: The elementary computer program is divided into four strands: terminology, keyboarding, applications, and problem solving. A grade-specific instructional timeline has been developed for these strands. A curriculum guide developed by local computer technologists contains a scope and sequence, objectives and learning activities. Computer are used by teachers and students as learning tools. Through Logo programming, children are able to explore geometry, formal logic, and problem solving steps while answering their own "What if?" questions. Students use word processing as a tool to strengthen writing skills.

Program Goal: The goal of the computer program is for students to use the computer as a means for logical problem solving and as a tool for learning.

Time and Staffing: Elementary students have one or two 45 minute periods of instruction a week. instruction is delivered by a well trained computer technologist assigned to each building.

COMPUTER INTEGRATED LEARNING SYSTEMS

Program Description: An Integrated Learning Systems distributed computer program has been added to ten elementary schools at various grade leels. In several schools, the program consists of four computers in each classroom, basic and enrichment software, and a management system for teachers. Each classroom also uses cooperative learning as a means of delivering instruction. Other schools have computers in a lab setting for entire classes to use at one time.

Program Goals: The goals of the Integrated Learning Systems program are (1) to develop and strengthen basic reading, language, and math skills; (2) to provide enrichment in all areas of instruction; and (3) to develop skills associated with computer use.

Time and Staffing: Students in each classroom use computer for approximately an hour a day. The program is managed by the classroom teacher with the assistance of a technology facilitator.
