Music

Program Description: Students are provided the opportunity to (1) develop singing concepts and skills (2) listen to and identify simple music forms, (3) hear, perform, and learn songs, dances, and music styles of cultures, and (4) respond to music through moving and playing. Teachers follow the principles inherent in the developmental methodology of Kodaly, Orff, and Weikert. The music is child-centered and presents many opportunities for students to succeed in musical performance.

Program Goal: The purpose of the music program is to provide the opportunity for music literacy in listening, singing, and movement and to promote the appreciation of music.

Time and Staffing: All students receive at least one 45 minute session of instruction per week. Many students, especially at the primary level, receive music 1-1/2 hours per week. String students begin their formal training in the sixth grade. Each elementary school has at least one strings class taught by one of LISD’s twelve string instructors. On the average, each young musician receives two (minimum) forty-five minute classes per week. Intermediate students receive music instruction from the regular classroom techer, a specialist, or another teacher at the grade level.
