SOCIAL STUDIES (1 - 6)

Program Description: The purpose of the elementary social studies program is to help students understand the world around them and to instill in them the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible citizenship. The student’s world is examined in an ever widening circle beginning with self and family and expanding to the neighborhood, community, state, region, nation, and world. The curriculum seeks to develop an appreciation of the historic and geographic factors along with economic and political relationships that have influenced the world. A locally developed scope and sequence structures the learning objectives to be used in the implementation of the social studies program.

Program Goals: The goal of elementary social studies is to prepare each student for responsible citizenship in a democratic form of government through an understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions which are his/her heritage.

Time:

    Grades one - two, 45 minutes daily, 225 minutes weekly in combination with science and health
    Grades three - six, 45 minutes daily, 225 minutes weekly

Staffing: Social studies is taught to a heterogeneous homeroom group by either the homeroom teacher or another teacher at the grade level. Social studies content is taught in units which address the essential elements. Thinking processes and skills are incorporated within the content. Opportunities are provided to apply research skills.
