LIBRARY SOCIALS 1998-1999
Mark your calendar for these events sponsored by the Friends of the Library
in support of all Lubbock City-County Library patrons. Socials are
free and introduce some of Lubbock's best-informed speakers. There will
be light refreshments and time to visit with new and old friends.
"THE BLACK EXPERIENCE ON THE LLANO ESTACADO"

The Black experience in West Texas began in the early 1500s. Later
there were the Buffalo Soldiers on the western frontier and legendary cowboys,
ranchers and other pioneers. The experience of African Americans
in our area from those days to this will be told in pictures, poetry, folk
tales and recorded history by Lubbock native Eric E. Strong -- educator,
poet, story teller, writer and lay historian. Strong is director
of Upward Bound programs at Texas Tech. He has received numerous accolades
for his accounts -- true and legendary -- presented on national radio and
television programs as well as worldwide on BBC.
'HOLOCAUST VICTIMS, THEN AND NOW"

7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, Mahon Library, 1306 9th Street
Helene Shiver was the only one of more than 100 members of her family to
survive the World War II death camp at Dachau. She recounts the story
of her pleasant life in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the interruption of a family
party by the Gestapo who, at gun point loaded all in trucks for their journey
into slavery and death. Psychologist Eileen Goggin, who has
made a special study of Germany's once preeminent position in psychoanalysis,
will follow Mrs. Shiver's account with a brief overview of the havoc wreaked
by the Holocaust on Germany and the world beyond.

2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, Mahon Library, 1306 9th Street
Details of this party to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of Mahon Library
and the 90th Birthday of Lubbock as an incorporated city will be announced
later by Friends of the Library.

The Friends of the Lubbock City-County Library (FOL) is a support group
to the Lubbock City-County Library. Though membership fees, book sales,
and investment interests, the group raises money to fund special projects
for the library.
