"THE BLACK EXPERIENCE ON THE LLANO ESTACADO"

by Eric E. Strong

7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, Mahon Library, 1306 9th Street

The Black experience in West Texas began in the early 1500s.  Later there were the Buffalo Soldiers on the western frontier and legendary cowboys, ranchers and other pioneers.  The experience of African Americans in our area from those days to this will be told in pictures, poetry, folk tales and recorded history by Lubbock native Eric E. Strong -- educator, poet, story teller, writer and lay historian.   Strong is director of Upward Bound programs at Texas Tech. He has received numerous accolades for his accounts -- true and legendary -- presented on national radio and television programs as well as worldwide on BBC.

'HOLOCAUST VICTIMS, THEN AND NOW"

by Helen Shiver and Dr. Eileen Goggin

7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, Mahon Library, 1306 9th Street

Helene Shiver was the only one of more than 100 members of her family to survive the World War II death camp at Dachau.  She recounts the story of her pleasant life in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the interruption of a family party by the Gestapo who, at gun point loaded all in trucks for their journey into slavery and death.   Psychologist Eileen Goggin, who has made a special study of Germany's once preeminent position in psychoanalysis, will follow Mrs. Shiver's account with a brief overview of the havoc wreaked by the Holocaust on Germany and the world beyond.
