MUSIC

Band
A student may continue in band or beginning band. If continued, further development of music techniques, to include advanced rhythm studies, intonation, dynamics, and music pedagogy. Good performance and reading techniques are stressed, with the idea of creating a precision organization capable for successful UIL concert/sight-reading competitions. Marches and pop selections are also performed during the fall season. These are performance-oriented organizations with heavy emphasis on early developmental techniques and UIL preparation. Choir
The eighth grade choir allows students to further their choral music education by singing more diverse literature, understanding of the changing and maturing voice, taking part in competitions, concerts, small group and swing choir performances. The student continues to compete for city and regional honor choirs. Eighth graders are often combined with older students to form advanced junior high choral ensembles. (3154300)

Orchestra
Approval of director, with former seventh grade orchestra training preferred. Further development of music techniques, to include advanced rhythm studies, intonation, dynamics, music pedagogy. Proper hand position and bowing stressed. Good performance and reading techniques will be studied with the idea of creating a precision organization capable for successful UIL concert/sight-reading competitions. Music from all styles and periods will be performed with attention to increasing reading and listening skills. (3154200)

Piano Lab
May be begun for first time or may be continued from 7th grade. If continued, further study of keyboard skills with additional utilization/training with synthesizers. The latest in electronics equipment is being utilized with training of general keyboard development. These are performing organizations but music is chosen according to the performance level of each student. Pianos/synthesizers are equipped with headphones and an intercommunications system, allowing both class and private study. (Cavazos) (3154500)
