ATHLETICS/PHYSICAL EDUCATION

All courses in this section meet the physical education requirement.

Competitive Athletics
Team competition is available in volleyball, football, basketball, tennis, track, and wrestling.

Participation will be governed by University Interscholastic League rules. (All schools) (3823000)

Dance
This course includes ballet, modern, and jazz dance styles. Basic skills in ballet moves and vocabulary, short enchainments (combinations), simple barre, center exercises and an introduction to character dance are taught in this course. Modern and jazz dance styles will also be taught. Students will work on individual and group choreography. Students will participate in community performances. (Hutchinson and O. L. Diving
The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the sport of competitive diving. Students will be provided with the opportunity to learn the rules of the sport, the basic dives from all five groups of dives and some basic optional dives. Students will also be exposed to competitive situations such as inter-squad meets and state-wide invitationals. As a result of participating in this program, students will improve their balance, muscular coordination, flexibility, body awareness, and self-confidence when performing for an audience. Gymnastics
This course will include basic tumbling, floor exercise, and fundamental skills on the gymnastic apparatus listed below. Activities will emphasize the progressive development of skills from beginning to advanced. Advanced students will work on more complicated skills as well as creating original routines for all activity areas. All students will work in a self-paced atmosphere. There will be opportunities to participate in various exhibitions and in intramural competition.

    Boys' Activities: Tumbling, floor exercise, horizontal bar, parallel bars, vault, pommel horse and still rings.
    Girls' Activities: Tumbling, floor exercise, uneven parallel bars, balance beam and vault.

Physical Education 7
Opportunities will be provided that utilize motor skills basic to efficient movement; teach rules, knowledge, and skills for participation in individual, dual, and team sports; motivate and develop a high level of personal and physical fitness; and foster knowledge and skills for leisure and lifetime sports activities. Taught at all junior high schools. (3823000)

Swimming
This course exposes students to the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. It develops confidence and a positive attitude within the swimmer through mastery to these strokes. The program goal is to teach students stroke technique, conditioning, basic knowledge of rules and skills associated with swimming competition, and maintenance of good fitness habits for a lifetime of wellness.
