WPS provides a safe haven for physically, emotionally, and sexually abused women and their dependent children. WPS offers a comprehensive resident and outreach program. Services provided are 24-hour crisis hotline, 24-hour transportation, basic life necessities such as food, clothing and personal hygiene items, social referral (day care, housing opportunities, income assistance, group and individual counseling for women and children), and legal advocacy.

Through a series of interventions, counseling, drug/alcohol abuse prevention, classes, job training, and child rearing courses, WPS clients slowly redevelop their sense of security and self-esteem. The transition is made from an abused person with low self-esteem to an empowered wage earner who has control over the lives of herself and her children.

WPS needs funds to acquire land and build a new facility to enable them to provide more services to a broader base of clients. A recent fire destroyed most of the shelter facility. Existing buildings are not designed with the specific needs of the WPS clients. WPS needs a new facility that meets the unique requirements of the women and children of the Lubbock community.

With a new facility, each family in crisis will have its own private housing unit, and 100% more families in crisis will be served and family needs will be taken care of with dignity.

In 1995, WPS provided service to over 5,000 clients; 503 adults and 571 children were shelter residents. Over 300 families were turned away due to lack of space.

Last year, there were 3,416 Family Violence Calls in Lubbock. WPS received 2,445 crisis calls; provided 17,704 emergency shelter days; served 43,800 meals; and provided 6,200 individual adult counseling sessions.

WPS provides emergency shelter for abused women and children, and long-term support through counseling, legal advocacy, and employment help.
