Basilides was a philosopher who was one of the main proponents of gnosticism in second-century Alexandria. He was active and it is clear that although the strains of Christian doctrine which eventually became a more or less coherent orthodoxy viewed them as heretics, they saw themselves, and would appear to pagans, as Christians. |
