The Apion family was from Oxyrhynchus, and three generations of its members between about 500 and 580 held the offices of quartermaster-general in the Persian war of 503-5, Praetorian prefect, Augustal prefect of the diocese of Egypt, Count of the Sacred Largesses and consul. What is spectacular is that the Apion family was one of the few Egyptian families to make its way into Roman politics. Shop
