Jebelein (Jeblein)
Jebelein is about 17 miles south of
Luxor on the west bank of the
Nile. This area, which means 'the two mountains', has a
spectacular view of the Nile floor and a number of surrounding
monuments. On the smaller western mountain is the Crocodilopolis
necropolis, which is all that remains of the ancient city by the same
name which was located at the foot of the mountain. The more
famous Crocodilopolis is in the Fayoum. The higher mountain to
the east is dominated by the tomb of Sheik Mussa but nearby is a Greek
period temple dedicated to Hathor and a
20th Dynasty mudbrick fort.
Across from Jebelein on the east bank of the Nile is Moalla,
another small necropolis with tombs dating from the First Intermediate
period. These tombs belong to local dignitaries who became local
rulers during the period. One tomb of interest belonging to Ankhtifi
explains the administration of the region during the famine that that occurred.
