The American
University in Cairo
The
American University in Cairo was established in 1919
by American citizens devoted to education and service
in the Middle East. Led for the first 27 years by an
Egypt-born missionary, Dr. Charles R. Watson, they
built a privately funded, English language university
calling for high standards of conduct and
scholarship. The university today provides a broad
spectrum of disciplines, professional studies and
learning opportunities in an atmosphere of
traditional academic freedom.
Cairo American
College
Cairo American College, located in Maadi- a
suburb of Cairo, is an American school with an
international student body. In the Fall of 1945,
fifty students enrolled in grades one through eight
at The Cairo School for American Children. They began
attending classes in a rented, three story,
vine-covered villa. Thus were the humble beginnings
of what is now known as Cairo American College.
