Quite to opposite to its' name, Dead Lakes State Recreation Area is teeming with wildlife. Years ago the Apalachicola River formed sand bars which blocked the Chipola River, causing waters to rise which eventually killed thousands of trees. Because of this geological phenomenon the area was named Dead Lakes. Time, however, has brought the abundant return of plant and animal life.
The campgrounds along this beautiful wetland has many nature trails. Trees are abundant in pines, magnolia and cypress. Don't forget to bring your fishing pole! This is a favorite spot for largemouth bass, catfish, jackfish and shellcrackers.
