Population Characteristics

Florida is one of the largest states in the United States, with some 13.6 million people, and one of the fastest growing as well. More importantly, among the fifty states, Florida has the fourth largest prime working age population (people between the ages of 18 and 44). This fact disproves the notion that the state’s residents are mostly of retirement age, and it serves as an indicator of Florida’s superior labor availability.

Panama City metropolitan (Bay County) recorded an increased 1990 population of 126,994 according to the latest population counted by the US Census. Population projection by Sales and Marketing for the five-year period 1992-1997 place Panama City’s growth rate at 1.01%

The median age of Bay County’s population in 1990 was 32.7 vis-à-vis the Florida average of 36.4 years. Of Florida’s 20 metropolitan areas, Panama City has the sixth lowest median age. The 1991 median household estimated buying income in Bay County was $25,525.

Florida’s population has the education required to perform well. Our state has the highest average level of education in the Southeast and compares well nationally.

* Amount the fifty states, Florida ranks third in associate degrees awarded by institutions of higher learning, fourth in the number of persons who have completed one or more years of college, and ninth in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees awarded.
