Bay County Florida / Panama City has long been recognized as North Florida's best place for diving. Being the home of over 50 artificial reef sites including 160' bridge spans, barges and aggressive artificial reef building projects along with many historical wrecks. "Skin diver" magazine calls Panama City the "wreck capital of the south".
Panama City Beach is where the largest selection of dive sites are located. It is easy to see why this area has gained the reputation as North Florida's #1 diving location. The Gulf Coast is a unique result of the effects of the Gulf Stream. The warm water of this stream, on its way to the Florida Keys from Mexico, passes along Northwest Florida and comes ashore on Panama City Beach. Beneath these waters are an abundance of exotic Marine life. The Warm Gulf water encourages rapid growth, and the wrecks and other underwater sites provide an excellent home for a variety of sea life, from Dolphins, giant Manta Rays, Sea Turtles and tropical fish. There are hundreds of natural reefs just a few miles off the coast of Panama City, ranging is size and depth from 80' to 110'. these reefs range in height from 3' to 8'. They are full of sea life and can be as enjoyable to dive as the wrecks and artificial reefs. The success the artificial reef project is due to the commitment of the community. This has been coordinated by the Panama City Marine Institute who has taken leadership in acquiring material and permits. For beginning or experienced snorkelers, Bay County and Panama City offers excellent areas. One is St. Andrews State Park and another is the grass flats behind Shell Island. The Grass Flats are shallow with a great variety of sea life and an excellent adventure for the novice snorkeler. If you are a diver or snorkeler, the area has much to offer. Information on these sites and packages are available for families or parties and can be requested from the area's dive shops.
