Diving in the Gulf of Mexico at Panama City, Florida is the second most dived destination in Florida. Second only to the Florida Keys. The water temperature, various sites, visability, and easy access contribute to the popularity of the area. As with any coastal dive destination the weather conditions change making the safety an important consideration. Remember to fly your "Diver Down" flag. Other boaters need to know.
The flag warning system in Panama City Beach is considered an important safety guage for the area. The flags are posted every mile on the beach along with every motel or hotel on the beach must also post the flags. They are on a 24 hour stand-by for emergencies during non-working hours, nights, weekends and holidays. The Hyperbaric Department stands ready to provide emergency telephone consultation without charge for diving or hyperbaric disorders on a 24 hour basis.
Other numbers to call: For further assistance the following is a suggested list of minimum safety equipment as recommended by the U.S. Coast Guard. Please check the federal regulations for your size boat. 1. A PFD (life jacket) for everyone on board. 2. Signal flares. 3. Loran or GPS and compass. 4. Fire extinguisher. 5. Horn or whistle. 6. Navigation lights. 7. Backfire flame arrestor (inboards). 8. VHF radio and cellular phone. |
